Eddie

Sister Suffragettes is inspired by an incident in the life of Ida B. Wells-Barnett, a Black journalist, newspaper editor and leader in both the women’s suffrage and the civil rights movements. Her pointed exposé of the practice of lynching, documented in the pamphlets Southern Horrors: Lynch Law in all Its Phases and A Red Record, ferreted out the real reason for the lynchings: black economic progress.

Because of her outspokenness and refusal to “play nice”, Mrs. Wells-Barnett often found herself at odds with the women’s suffrage movement. As a result, the leaders of the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) insisted that she not march with the Illinois delegation at President Woodrow Wilson’s inauguration, where they were demanding the right to vote. The reason? A black woman marching alongside whites would offend some Southern women.

But Ida had other plans. On March 9, 1913, she watched the parade from the crowd until the Illinois delegation had passed then joined in, protected from angry Southerners by white women sympathetic to the plight of all women, regardless of race.

"If the Illinois women do not take a stand now in this great democratic parade then the colored women are lost... I shall not march at all unless I can march under the Illinois banner."–Ida B. Wells

Granny

King and Anderson Plantation, ... Digital ID: 1260037. New York Public Library
Photo courtesy of New York Public Library
Granny is an African American midwife--or was until the law banned her from assisting in childbirths. Having helped birth 3,000 babies, the government decided--after she lost not a one--that she was unfit to continue. Granny midwives were a major part of American history. These women were there to assist in childbirths when white doctors didn't wish to bother with the African American community.

She tells HerStory in They Call Her Granny.

Empowering Women With Words and T-shirts!

I want to announce something today...something I am just over the moon about. You see, HerStory followers, we aren't the only ones who are wanting to empower women.

There's a T-shirt company with the same agenda.

It's called Keira's Kollection. The man behind the logo is Kevin Wagstaff and when he saw the T-shirts girls were wearing, shirts that said they were too pretty to do their homework, so they had their brother do it for them, he started his own company, only his shirts say things like:

Be Strong, Be Inspired, Be Present.

Be Confident, Be Different, Be Yourself.

And my personal favorite: Strong is Beautiful.

And I have news for you...Mr. Wagstaff has graciously agreed to donate a Strong is Beautiful T-shirt upon the release of HerStory in March. So one very lucky woman is not only going to walk away with a copy of HerStory and be empowered through words, but she will also be showing her empowerment right there on her shirt.

Can't wait for the giveaway? Buy yourself one today on Keira's Kollection and take a moment to like them on Facebook.

To stay posted on the giveaway opportunity and book release, be sure to follow the HerStory blog!

Maud

In 1962, a pit explosion at Hapton Valley colliery, near Burnley, Lancashire, killed nineteen people. Maud Waggett, the resident nursing sister, went to the face to give morphia to the wounded and dying men. She was later awarded a gong from the Queen for her bravery, but also faced disciplinary action from the NCB, because at the time, it was illegal for women to go into the mine.

Read about her in A Pit Story.

Cathay Elizabeth Wright

Cathay Elizabeth Wright is a nurse in the Civil War. Like many nurses of the time she's spent most of her year of duty at a hospital in D.C. cooking and writing letters for the wounded. All attempts to learn any actual medicine are rebuffed. When the battle lines are about to be drawn in Gettysburg, Cathay bullies her way into an off-field hospital with a handful of nurses. Still, even at the edge of battle, she's kept from the fight and the true depth of help she feels she can offer.

In a moment of frustration she takes a chance and heads into battle with her best friend. There they work together to save a life, and fight their way into true nursing service.

HerStory is in An Uncivil War.

About the Author:
Sarah Cass’s world is regularly turned upside down by her three special-needs kids and loving mate, so she breaks genre barriers, dabbling in horror, straight fiction, and urban fantasy. She loves historicals and romance and characters who are real and flawed, so she writes to understand what makes her fictional people tick. And she lives for a happy ending—eventually. And enough twists to make it look like she enjoys her title of Queen of Trauma Drama a little too much.

An ADD tendency leaves her with a variety of interests that include singing, dancing, crafting, cooking, and being a photographer. She fights through the struggles of the day, knowing the battles are her crucible. She may emerge scarred, but always stronger. The rhythms to her activities drive her words forward, pushing her through the labyrinths of the heart and the nightmares of the mind, driving her to find resolutions to her characters’ problems.

Her first full length novel, Changing Tracks, is due to release in February with another novel set for release in April. While busy creating worlds and characters as real to her as her own family, she leads an active online life with her blog, Redefining Perfect, which gives a real and sometimes raw glimpses into her life and art. You can most often find her popping out her 140 characters in Twitter-speak and on Facebook.

Nancy & Abigail

What I'm going to do on this blog is introduce many of the women you will find within the pages of HerStory. I shall start with two women I created myself. With each acceptance, a new post will be made.

It's pre-1920 and Nancy has a job and beau--life is good--so she thinks. Then one day, her friend asks her a darned good question. "Does he know that?"

Does her beau Lester know how badly she wants, needs, and wishes to fight for the right to vote? If he doesn't support her cause, he clearly isn't the man for her.

Abigail is the silent suffragette. She's biding her time and finds her own quiet way to support the cause.

These women you will meet in From You No & Silent Suffragette.
*Spelling error is on purpose. You'll see why. ;)

Strength Comes in Many Forms

The purpose of this anthology is to honor women in history: our mothers, our grandmothers, our ancestors, queens, suffragettes, pioneers, wives, sisters, and daughters. Being a woman requires strength and a woman's strength comes in many forms.

There were women who immigrated, faced the unknown, striving to give their children a better life. There were women who picketed the White House and were thrown in prison, merely for wanting to have a say in government. There were women who stood by king and country to help wage wars, fighting for either their religion or their people. There were women who quietly refused to move from buses to break the "color barrier." There were women who wrote poems, inciting revolutions that would be an inspiration for generations to come.

Without these women, you wouldn't be here. Each one, whether she fought with words or with swords  helped make this world possible for you. She faced down adversity for YOU. She earned rights and made waves and got that vote for YOU.

Pagan Writers Press would like to help you honor these women this March in an anthology of flash fiction and short stories.

Here is how you can participate. Here is how you can continue the fight...because trust me, the fight continues today. Until women have complete and total equal pay, until women can point fingers at their rapists and see justice done, until women are truly seen in male-dominated work forces as EQUAL to men...the fight continues.

Here is your chance to fight with words. Posted below is the announcement for our submissions call.

We are seeking short stories/flash fiction for Women's History Month for an anthology to be published in March 2013. HerStory: Fiction Honoring Women's History Month. Each story needs to be historical, any era, time. No more than 3k words a piece. (If you go over, no big deal but that would be the goal) Flash fiction/shorties is a brief look into someone's life. The story can be about an ancestor of yours, a woman in history you find on Wiki and think did something awesome, a woman you make up. Perhaps she's standing up for herself, arguing an issue, rebelling against society. She can fight with a sword or her words or her silence. A woman's strength comes in many forms. She may be trying to improve her life or that of her children. She may be fighting for women's or civil rights. Romance is fine, but no sex scenes. Author bios will be at the end of each story. This will be published as an ebook and print if it reaches 50k. Royalties will be paid. Authors share 40% of print royalties, 50% of ebook royalties. We would like to have all these stories by February as that entire month will be dedicated to editing and formatting. Send stories to tchevrestt(at)yahoo.com for consideration. Thank you.

*Original work only, please. These are not to be excerpts from previously published or about to be published material.
